Mapping in iOS 8

Apple’s homegrown Maps app is a built-in window to the world, providing maps, satellite images, business information, and directions ①.

When it debuted in 2012, the Maps app quickly earned a reputation for containing incorrect data. Although it has had time to improve, Maps still isn’t the right solution for everyone (for an alternative, see Google Maps, later). However, if Maps works well for you, you’ll gain some system integration advantages, such as being able to ask Siri for directions.

Moving around the Map

• Pan: Drag on the map.
• Zoom in and out: Pinch in and out.
• Rotate: Place two fingers on the screen and twist your wrist. To reset the view, tap the compass in the upper right ②.

Map Views

You can choose a view by tapping the info icon in the lower right. View include:

• Standard: The Standard view displays a drawn map showing roads, cities, and basic information ③. It’s usually the best view to use when on cellular data, since it’s not as bandwidth intensive as the other views.
