Whether you’re upgrading an iPhone or iPad to Apple’s latest mobile operating systems or trying to master the obscure ins and outs of your device, Take Control of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is here to help.
As he has done since 2014, Josh Centers explores what’s new and different in this year’s releases, including Contact Posters, improved autocorrect and predictive text, interactive Home screen widgets, accessibility improvements, offline maps, animated video reactions, and much more. In addition, the book includes information about many basic iPhone and iPad features, even if they haven’t changed recently. Although this book is not intended as a comprehensive guide to everything an iPhone or iPad can do, it’s suitable for beginners and long-time iOS/iPadOS users alike.

What Was New in Version 1.1
Apple announced new iPhones, and I discussed their handful of new features. There were also some minor changes to iOS 17 from the betas, along with a few minor features I didn’t mention in 1.0:
- Camera: I documented some small changes to the Camera app: changes to Apple ProRAW settings, the new horizon level feature, and a new setting to lock white balance while recording video.
- Home: The Home app can now show you what times of day your energy is the cleanest.
- New Sounds & Haptics settings: iOS 17 provides some new ringtones and text tones, along with some changes to Sounds & Haptics settings. See “Other Changes.”
- Multiple Timers: You can now create multiple timers in the Clock app. See “Clock Timers.”
Another thing to note: for the first time, Apple has published PDFs detailing every change in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, no matter how minor. For instance, did you know that in iOS 17, “Character spacing dynamically adjusts to better accommodate non-Latin scripts with characters that may collide with one another or be vertically clipped”?
