Friday Report: January 15, 2021

Remember how, way back in the good old days of 2020, we used to joke that every week seemed to last for months? Well, it feels like we’re about three years into 2021, and (checks calendar) huh. Wow.

Anyway, I don’t know about you, but I have continued to find the news pretty darn distracting, and the same is true for all the other Take Control authors. So we ask for your continued forbearance. Slowly but surely we’re making progress, and as long as there aren’t too many more armed insurrections in the coming days, I think our pace of new releases should start to pick up pretty soon.

This week we published the third edition of Michael E. Cohen’s Take Control of Pages, and considering the circumstances, it has been selling at a good clip. If you’ve ever wanted to get more out of Apple’s surprisingly powerful word processing and page layout app, this book is just what you need.

Several books are closing in on completion, including a new edition of Sharon Zardetto’s Take Control of Numbers, updates to Scholle McFarland’s Take Control of Calendar and Reminders and my Take Control of Apple Mail, and a new book on Mac security by Glenn Fleishman. I wish I could tell you the exact release dates for these, or even what order they’ll appear in, but the situation is, as they say, highly fluid. We’re all typing and editing as rapidly as conditions permit, and the books will ship as soon as they’re ready. (Needless to say, many more titles are also in the queue after those just mentioned.)

In other news, a number of readers have been noticing issues with some of our books in MOBI format, and I spent quite a few days researching, experimenting, and writing up what I know about the situation in All About MOBI Files. If you’re having any MOBI difficulties at all, I urge you to read that, as it’s the definitive (as of this point) word on the topic. At the same time, I made a few revisions to our Device Advice page, whose content partially overlaps.

I have no progress to report on my excessively long Take Control to-do list, but I did manage to make significant headway on a couple of major business and personal projects, so at least movement is occurring.

I’ll be back here next week. In the meantime, stay safe, wear a mask, and be kind to each other.
