Just getting things set up here - feel free to chat amongst yourselves if you're here early.
10:45 AM | |
David
How can I submit a question to Joe in advance? Here? Now? Anyone know?
12:13 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Now is fine - ask away and we'll queue it up.
12:23 PM | |
(And yes, you can ask here.)
12:24 PM | ||
David
OK, Joe, I've looked at the variety of M$Office-like apps for iPad. All have very negative comments/reviews. While some can be taken with a grain of salt, the predominance of them has scared me away from them. You indicated preference for Office2HD, but the comments there are extreme, IMHO. Should the authors be taken as "trolls"? Or is a recent update a disaster? I take it your experience is good, otherwise you wouldn't recommend, yes? I just don't want to throw money away....
12:30 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Good question - we'll be sure to ask Joe at the end.
David
Tag: Joe, thanks for doing all this presenting. Very informative for me.
12:32 PM | |
Tag01 - and thanks, Adam! Very productive.
Adam C. Engst
Glad to hear it! :-)

What does T-20 mean?
12:49 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
T-10... or, we'll be starting in 10 minutes. (Getting in touch with my inner mission control)
12:51 PM | |
Lou
Got it! Thanks!

Applause!

01:01 PM | |
Tonya Engst
This is an update from show #1, I believe.

FileApp Pro is what I use.
01:05 PM | |
Tonya Engst
PMjcinpvaz, I'll pass that on to Joe after the show is over.

Tom Piper
iX500 ScanSnap is incredible . . . just got one.
01:06 PM | |
lou
Tom - did you look at Canon Scantini?
01:07 PM | |
Tonya Engst
OCR - optical character recognition so the text is text, not an image.
Tom Piper
No, saw iX500 at Macworld/iWorld, and fell in love.
01:09 PM | |
lou
Thx, Tom
01:10 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
It's interesting that Apple is pushing the 128 GB iPad at business. Nice to see them catching up with "working" on your iPad! :-)
lou
It's not too hard to fill up an iPad with videos and magazines!
01:11 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Cool - didn't know that!
01:13 PM | |
Miraz
Oh, nice with the recently closed tabs…
01:14 PM | |
breckhand
Is the recently closed tabs Safari feature available in older versions of iOS?
01:15 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Although it didn't seem to work consistently for me, the bookmarks bar is also supposed to appear if you touch in a blank area of the URL/address field.
Adam C. Engst
Not sure - I'd have to look on our original iPad, which isn't within reach.
Steve
Can't see how to access settings
01:16 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Steve, in the Settings app.
In Settings, look a ways down on the left for the Safari category and tap it.
Lou
Does that iCloud feature work on Safari for Windos?
01:17 PM | |
Steve
what is a settings app?
01:18 PM | |
Never mind, I found it
01:19 PM | ||
Tonya Engst
Steve, Settings is a default app provided by Apple.
Oh, glad you found it!
That Settings app is key to a lot of aspects of controlling how the iPad behaves.
01:20 PM | ||
Just to repeat and reassure, all the names of these apps with links will be in the show notes!
01:21 PM | ||
Ellen
kids are noisy in the background...is it possible to re-watch this presentation after viewing it live?
Tonya Engst
Yes. Ellen, you can watch at any time.
01:22 PM | |
Also, it should "play" live even right now. If you pause it and then come back 5 minutes later and click play, it will pick up where you left off.
An hour or two after the live show, also, the recorded version will be available.
Ellen
Thanks! Can I review older ones, then, too? And is there a time limit if I can review them again?
01:23 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Yes you can. If you look in the PDF of the show notes, you'll see a "chapter" for each show. At the start of each show, there is a ticket image with a play button on it.
01:24 PM | |
I'm not sure that they'll be available forever, but certainly they'll be available into the foreseeable future.
I expect that by the time we might not have them available, maybe due to some major server overhaul, they will be entirely obsolete... you know, in 2023 or something. ;-)
01:25 PM | ||
Adam C. Engst
We relate to our customers directly. :-)
01:26 PM | |
Tonya Engst
If we had a many hundreds of thousands of customers, however, we'd probably be looking at a CRM to help us keep track of everyone.
01:28 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Or, if we had many fewer customers and needed to be contacting them constantly about projects...
01:29 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Joe used to work at Kensington on mouse and trackpad stuff. I think he did some project management there.
01:30 PM | |
Alex
Is it possible to "download" the four videos to my Mac for anytime viewing?
01:32 PM | |

How does one access the PDFs? I need show #1
Tonya Engst

You might already have the PDF... you should have clicked through from it to get here. Yes?
Enter Your Name Here
Clicked on the email link.
01:33 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Alex, Adam can answer that, I'll make sure that he loops back to you before the presentation ends.
If you can let me know your name or email address so I can look you up, I'll make sure you get a copy.
Adam C. Engst
Alex, you can download each of the shows from the show page - links are at the bottom.
We'll also be sending email with a link to the full set of show note later today, after we build in Q&A from this one.

I will look to see if I can access it. I'll email you my contact info if I have trouble. Thanks

That explains why it doesn't work on my Safari for Win! Thx!

01:46 PM | |
Tom Piper
Do you expect Microsoft Office to come out soon for the iPad?
jcinpvaz
PayPal card reader is a triangle.

You can now get NeoOffice for the iPad. Forget MS Office.

Do you know if ScanSnap has a auto-export to database feature, particularly if it would read a name field (example: school student records)?

Does Joe use an iPad more often for work tasks than using a computer?
Marco
Slightly off the subject: Will Joe write TC book on managing pictures and videos? I know this topic was excluded from "Working with your iPad" but since we refurbish apartments in Italy, we work with thousand of pics and videos and would appreciate an in-depth discussion on managing pics and videos on your iPad. Thanks and congrats for these mind opening videos!

An example of good and bad reviews is any GPS app.
01:57 PM | |
As a (retired) developer, I can say from experience that the support department is the one that responds to customer issues.
01:58 PM | ||
Tonya Engst
Also, sometimes there really is a problem and it is commented on by reviewers. The developer then fixes the problem. But,t he bad reviews remain and there isn't an easy way for the developer to make this clear.
Lou
Do you prefer ScanSnaps to Canon Scan-tini's?
01:59 PM | |
jcinpvaz
Independent developers can respond to negative reviews by updating the software and commenting on the changes. I see this in some apps.
02:00 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Marco, we are actually talking with Jeff Carlson about creating a TC ebook about topics like this. I hope he'll write it, since he has an excellent background for the topic.
02:01 PM | |
Marco
Thank you Tonya, I will be looking forward to that TC ebook!
02:02 PM | |
Tonya Engst
jcinpvaz, good point.

Great series of videos thanks! I learned a lot.
02:03 PM | |
Tonya Engst
If you need to leave because our hour is up, that's okay - we've certainly hit the main topics.
I expect it will wrap up soon.
But, please stick around as long as it's going, of course, if you can!

Adam C. Engst

Yes, almost done

which external keyboard do you like best?
cris
I like Logitech's keyboard. Good protective case too.
02:05 PM | |
Lou
I worry that NeatReceipts uses all proprietary software; could be a problem if vendor disappears. Not worried that Fujitsu or Canon will go out of business anytime soon.
Tonya Engst
Ellen, from show#1 which suggests several keyboards, Joe calls out the Apple Wireless Keyboard.
02:06 PM | |

I really appreciate this series. Great stuff!

Joe, a few people here were asking about the Canon Scantini - have you had a chance to try that one?
02:09 PM | |
Joe Kissell
The recently closed tabs feature is fairly new, I think iOS 5+?
Adam C. Engst
Scantini sounds either like a mixed drink or a small piece of beachwear
Joe Kissell
Yes, Adam confirmed it's in iOS 5.
02:10 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Scan-tini actually, with the hyphen. Maybe it is portable enough to bring to the beach. :-)
Tom Piper
We are waiting for Fujitsu to enable wireless scanning with the Mac, in addition to iOS devices.
02:12 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Just to mention it again, Adam and Joe and I will be working on the next version of the show notes today. If all goes well, we'll release them before dinner (here on the east coast of the United States). If we need a little more time to put on the polish, it'll be Sunday or Monday.
Adam C. Engst
Alright, folks, I'm calling it a wrap... Thanks for attending, and look for that email soon. Later!
