Hi everyone! When it's show time, Adam will tell us to reload. After you reload, you should see the presentation begin. (If not, reload again...)

Is there a way to make this full screen, I seemed to be trapped in the small box...
12:58 PM | |
P.S. No additional controls appear in lower right corner

Excellent sound/video in Panama City Beach.

Adam C. Engst

Glad to hear it!

Sounds interesting!
01:08 PM | |
Also can share with ATV?
01:12 PM | ||
Tonya Engst
I will compile questions for Joe to answer at the end.

Merci

GrandpaChris, by ATV, do you mean Apple TV?
Adam C. Engst
Yes, you can share video to an Apple TV, via AirPlay, as long as you have the right versions.
Tonya Engst
Okay, never mind, Adam answered the question!

Have sound but lost the picture
01:14 PM | |
Tonya Engst
I presume that you'd just turn on AirPlay in the multitasking bar on the iPad.
sk, try reloading. Sorry to hear that you lost the picture.

Reloading worked,thanks!

Our cat can be kind of insistent. :-)
01:16 PM | |
Tonya Engst

The product names and related links will all be in the updated show notes, so don't worry about writing everything down while Joe is talking.

Adam C. Engst
Fingers crossed!

Reloaded worked...

This got freaky when we were testing...

Will try after . . .

Having trouble, GrandpaChris?

I use LogMeIn and ove it! I use it for Hauptwerk as a touch screen.
01:20 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Glenn Fleishman had nice things to say about LogMeIn in several of his (somewhat) recent Take Control ebooks.
01:21 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Windows is always installing updates. :-)

Richard
I am not sure I understand the reasons to use sharing. Is it to have second screen? Is there any advantage in using the iPad to present from and linked to my Mac to mirror it?
01:27 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Richard, the first advantage is that if you don't have a Mac or Windows machine handy, you can do work that you would otherwise do on one of those computers.
01:28 PM | |
Or, you might not even own a Mac or Windows machine, but need to run desktop software.
Does that answer the question?
01:29 PM | ||
Christine
Who knew? This is way cool.
01:31 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
It is pretty impressive - I've always been a big fan of remote control and collaborative stuff, and it's fascinating to see it come to the iPad

Tonya, I joined a bit late.... missed how to get the handout.
01:33 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Hi Mac...
GrandpaChris Greaves.Florida
True, Adam. My LTE mini 64gig is my new "Al Mac Device" and I have VOiP softphone from the App Store called Bria. So my call to and from the grandchildren are free!
01:34 PM | |
Tonya Engst
... the handout will be polished and PDF'd after the presentation. We'd like to finish it today, but it might be tomorrow morning. Joe likes to have a chance to add last-minute stuff after the presentation, in case any of the Q&A is sufficiently interesting to be included or expanded on.
...we'll send you email when it's done, or you can click the Check for Updates button on the cover (page 1) of whatever version of the season pass that you have already.

My wife and I wish to create a life diary . . . This might work . . PiratePac . .
01:37 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
PiratePad is an instantiation of the old EtherPad code that Google bought for Google Docs
Mac Carter
Are all of his notes for each session added as updates to the be added to the Seasons Pass PDF?
Tonya Engst
Mac, yes...
Adam C. Engst
Yes, Mac, that's exactly it.
Tonya Engst
Version 1.0 had no notes, version 1.1 had notes from show #1, version 1.2 had notes from show #1 and #2, and the upcoming version 1.3 will have notes from the first three shows.
01:38 PM | |
Mac Carter
Thanks, guys! This is really good stuff. I plan to share it with some clients who are big on using iPads.
Perfect. Thanks.
Tonya Engst
GrandpaChris, I'm not sure how good PiratePad is for saving/storing a document long-term. Google Docs might be better for your purpose.

Buying books from Take Control supports them AND these kind of presentations which I really like! I'm not an employee:)
Mac Carter
Tonya, if I have a client who wants to watch the 4 shows online at some point, how would they do that? Would they simply purchase the "Season Pass" PDF and thereby gain access via your website?
01:42 PM | |
Tonya Engst
Mac, yes...
Mac Carter
Great. Thanks.
Tonya Engst
...people who bought the season pass initially had to wait before they could watch even the first presentation. The later on that you buy the pass, the less you have to wait for... but, you can't watch them live if they've already occurred.
However, you can watch (or listen to) the recording at any time after it's available.

Adam C. Engst
The eavesdropping could also be done via malware that has taken over nearby PCs. :-(
Tonya Engst
Once you have the season pass, notice the ticket images at the start of each chapter. The images for a show that's been recorded let you play it. For a future show, the image lets you add the date to your calendar or "play" it, but if you play it early, you'll just go to the Web URL where it will occur in the future.

The odds of there being a bad guy on whatever network you're on are low, but the odds of there being nearby malware sniffing traffic are higher.

Is IPad as secure via VPN as BB10?
01:45 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
I'm not sure Joe knows about BlackBerry 10, but we'll ask
01:46 PM | |
Coming up on Q&A soon - this would be a good time to ask your questions

This is off-topic, but I'm having a heckuva time coordinating documents and books that I download onto my iPad onto my Mac. iTunes tells me that I have to erase everything on the iPad and it will load the ones stored in iTunes. I want to go the other way. I've been copying them to Stanza, iBooks and Kindle, hoping one of them will do the trick.

Eileen
Do you have any suggestions for terminal emulators (connecting to a Unix network)?
01:48 PM | |
Chuck
Confused about creating a VPN on ipad. CAn I use this as an individual as opposed to a corporate user, to secure my ipad use at a free wifi hotspot/
Joan
The other issue I'm having is when I sync my contacts (Addressbook) it triplicates or more on the iPad, but doesn't copy the ones from the iPad into the Mac's Addressbook. I'm not using iCloud, because I don't want to upgrade to 10.8. Too expensive to upgrade my Adobe software. etc... AND I don't like the 10.8 interface. Three clicks to do what used to take one, for instance. Slows down my workflow...

What is VCN?

Adam C. Engst

VPN is a virtual private network for security
01:53 PM | |
VNC is a remote control protocol

I have found using Hotspot Shield sometimes prevents access to some sites using a browser. Am I doing something wrong?

What about security with 3G or 4G?

Is there a Mac equivalent for Cloak
Adam C. Engst

Randy, yes, Cloak is on the Mac too
Last call for question
02:01 PM | ||
Alan Forkosh
About my last comment, $G is often faster than the upstream ISP connection, not the local WiFi
GrandpaChris Greaves.Florida
Is VOiP also secure?
Tonya Engst
Joan, send me or Joe your address book question - he can answer it and email is a better venue since it's a bit out of scope for this presentation.
Joan
Ok Tonya, thanks!

02:02 PM | |

Like doing text editing? The other part of my Q. was about using the iPad to present with. Can I use the pad and mirror my Mac at times, show th screen?
02:06 PM | |
Joe Kissell
If you use Air Display to turn your iPad into another monitor, you can then turn on mirroring on your Mac so they're both showing the same thing.
02:07 PM | |
Adam C. Engst
Richard, if you can describe what you're trying to do, we might be able to be more specific. (Or we can take this to email.)
